There are three main types of foam board insulation used in residential construction, each with its own advantages and applications.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)
Made from Styrofoam beads, EPS foam board has gaps between the beads, allowing air and water to pass through. As a result, it provides less protection against moisture compared to other types.
Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)
This type of foam board is manufactured to create a continuous closed-cell structure, which offers excellent resistance to both air and water infiltration, making it more effective than EPS.
Polyisocyanurate (Polyiso)
The top-performing option, Polyiso foam board offers the best water resistance and thermal performance. With foil layers on both sides, it also provides the highest fire rating among the three options.
